Rhodes: once a luxe holiday spot for ancient Romans, who loved to chill out beside the Colossus or wander its mystical grottos, fishing for water nymphs. Bettany Hughes traces their sandalled footsteps, en route exploring the legacy of the Knights of St John and highlighting the story of the heroic Turkish consul who rescued many Jewish families here in the Nazi era. This year’s festival marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the second world war with performances from Rod Stewart, Blessing Offor and Sam Ryder.
