We would like to hear your memories of the 1976 UK heatwave

2 hours ago 9

The record temperature for June set in Hampshire in 1976 is expected to be surpassed during this current UK heatwave.

The highest June temperature on record of 35.6C was set on 29 June 1957 in London. This was then equalled on 28 June 1976 in Southampton during that year’s heatwave.

For 15 consecutive days from 23 June to 7 July 1976 temperatures reached or exceeded 32.2°C somewhere in England every single day.

Now in 2026, a “heat-dome” settling over western Europe could bring temperatures of up to 40C by Wednesday - close to the UK’s all-time high of 40.3C, which was measured in July 2022.

We would like to speak to people who remember the heatwave of 1976. What are your memories of that time? How did you cope ? How did it affect daily life? And how was your experience different from now? We would love to hear your stories and see your photos from that period of hot weather.
