A delve into the history of the Champions League shows that managers can and do win in their first season at a club, but also that experience matters. Which makes it interesting, given that tenures for the 2026‑27 crop range from newly appointed coaches to one with almost 15 years in charge. Some have managed more than 100 matches in the competition, others none.
It gets under way on Tuesday with 14 of the 36 clubs led by managers who have been in the role for less than a year. It cannot match the turnover of the Premier League, in which 11 of 20 managers were appointed in 2026, but the tenures of the head coaches involved this season break down neatly.
There are also 14 managers who have been in charge for at least two years. This leaves eight in the middle, who qualified for the Champions League in their first full season at their club and now get to show what they can do.
Being new to a team is no barrier to winning. Many who have led sides to the ultimate European club glory did so in their first campaign. Both Chelsea’s Champions League triumphs were secured by managers who got the job the same year. Carlo Ancelotti began both of his stints at Real Madrid by helping them to become champions of Europe in his year one, and in between Zinedine Zidane won three Champions League trophies on the bounce when he first managed the club.
Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique also won the competition with Madrid’s great rivals, Barcelona, at the earliest opportunity. Barcelona’s current manager, Hansi Flick, ended his first season at Bayern with a treble. Liverpool fans will hope Andoni Iraola can emulate his countryman Rafael Benítez by winning the Champions League immediately after settling into the Anfield hot seat.
Despite these examples making a decent case for new managers winning the competition this season, betting markets are favouring the more established coaches.
And predictably enough, Paris Saint-Germain are the favourites with bookmakers, but it has nothing to do with this being Luis Enrique’s fourth season at the helm. The two‑time defending champions have a deep squad and face nothing like the domestic demands of their rivals in other top leagues.
Barcelona, Arsenal and Bayern Munich make up the top four in the betting, with their managers also among the 13 longest-serving as the league phase begins. This contrasts with the next quartet of likeliest champions, all of whom have managers who took charge this year.
But do not assume freshness in the role automatically equates to inexperience. Real Madrid’s new manager, José Mourinho, has recorded 160 matches in the competition, the fifth most in history. Ancelotti leads on 218 Champions League games, ahead of three of the Premier League’s five “big beasts” of management: Alex Ferguson (206), Guardiola and Arsène Wenger (both 191). Mourinho and Jürgen Klopp (102 matches, seventh most) are the other members of modern English football’s most heralded managerial quintet.

Only Mourinho is involved in the Champions League this season and he will savour being the new kid on the block who is also the old hand. Mourinho will be confident of going past the last 16 for the first time since 2014 given the talent at his disposal.
The eight managers he will face in the league phase have collectively managed fewer Champions League games than he has. Indeed, the combined total of the 24 least experienced managers in the competition adds up to fewer than Mourinho will bring to Madrid. These relative rookies are not only managing outsider, either. Inter’s Cristian Chivu has 10 Champions League games under his belt, which is more than the managers of Manchester City (six), Manchester United (one) and Liverpool (none).
As the competition gets under way, the key number is 16. That tally of points in the league phase has proven enough to secure an automatic spot in the last 16. Whatever a manager’s level of experience, the first target is to finish above the playoff places. After that, Champions League knowhow could prove vital.
