Halle Bailey: ‘It’s a vulnerable place to be – a young woman cast as a Disney princess’

After your experience in two major romance projects – The Little Mermaid and You, Me & Tuscany – how do you know if you’ve found the right Prince Charming? EmmaTseng
I think each character has a different version of their Prince Charming. For Ariel, I love that she wasn’t all about looking for a prince and that she only went above water because she was curious for life and her future. Anna, my character in You, Me & Tuscany, is also going after her own heart with her impulsive decisions, because you only live once. Both characters are bold and headstrong, and when they stumble upon their Prince Charmings – who are reassuring and affirming and bring out the best in them – it’s just the cherry on top.

Your You, Me & Tuscany co-star Regé-Jean Page plays the Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton. Did his English charm rub off on you? And if you could be any character in Bridgerton, who would it be? MrSOBaldrick
Regé is so funny. He’s such a warm, kind-hearted guy. I feel his English accent really comes out now that we’re here in London. When we’re in my home – LA – it goes in and out. I hope some of his English charm rubbed off on me. I love Bridgerton, yes. I would want to be the queen, because she is amazing, gets to choose the diamond of the season, matchmake and watch people fall in love.

How has motherhood affected your artistry? vanderpump
Tremendously. In music especially, I feel things very deeply. I think that’s when you’re at your best, when you can write clearly about the things you feel so deeply. When you have a child, you feel things even deeper. A whole new portal of universal love opens up – a love that I never expected. My love for my child is so big, it feels like the moon. I love that I feel like a different person. I would definitely say it’s made everything better for me – creatively, as a writer, as an artist and as a mom.

You attracted some negativity when you were cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid, but it was great to see that you rose above it. Did Rachel Zegler reach out when people similarly tried to shame her Snow White for not having “skin as white as snow”? Barney_McGrew
I love Rachel. She feels like a true friend, even though we’re really just Instagram friends, although we have met once in passing. It’s crazy when you’re a young woman in this industry and given a big opportunity – you automatically hear so many opinions about why they think you are great or not great for the role, and try to fit you into whatever box that they want to. I learned that you just have to learn how to tune out a lot of the noise. It’s a vulnerable place to be: a young woman with so many eyes on you, especially when you become a Disney princess.

Do you still ask Beyoncé for advice? Blaze682
I do, yeah. She’s a very humble, genuine human being. It feels like she’s part of my family, like a cool auntie. I’ve known her since I was 15 and she took my sister [the singer and actor Chlöe] and me under her wing. I do still reach out and say: “Hey, can you listen to this and tell me your opinion?” She’s always so responsive and attentive, but she also lets you be you. I love that about her – she just lets you fly. She’s there if you need her, else she’s like: “Go do your thing, girl,” and I love that.

How often do people confuse you with Halle Berry? Dr_J_A_Zoidberg
The funny thing is that my parents were inspired by her name. They liked the name Hailey, but Hailey Bailey doesn’t quite work, so they went with Halle instead. I have met her – she’s been so kind to me every time. But people do often refer to me as Halle Berry and I have to say: “It’s Bailey.”

You come across as approachable, natural and sincere. What’s the best and the worst thing about success and stardom? eamonmcc
The best thing is that I get to travel the world and take care of the people that I love. As for the worst things – I don’t know. It’s all about perspective. I’m just grateful that I have people who support me and care about my career. Selfies are fine – unless I’m in the bathroom, when I’ll have to say: “You know, I have to go first!”

What film genre would you like to take on next? Thatgirl225
I’d love to do a horror. When I saw Sinners, I thought: “I wish I was in that movie!” All the things that I’ve done so far are very nice but lighthearted, so I’d love to do something a bit heavier. The music girl in me thinks: “Let’s go a little darker.”

Which do you prefer: being a pop star or a movie star? Blaze682
I don’t know if it’s because I grew up there, but being on stage feels easier than being in a movie, because I feel like I’m singing about my experiences. For a movie, you have to perform to a crew of 90 people, who are all staring at you, waiting for you to do the right thing, waiting for you to cry on demand. When I’m singing, I can close my eyes, sing my heart out and go to a place in my head where I can hide.

How would you describe your relationship with God and your personal beliefs and spiritual perspectives? EmmaTseng
I definitely believe in God. I grew up Christian in Atlanta, Georgia. I feel I was given whatever this is – this voice – and I’m supposed to do something with it, to give it back. My grandparents would quote from the Bible: “To whom much is given, much is expected.” It basically says: when you’re given something, you must do good with it and give it back to God in some way, and I feel like I try to do that every day.
