How I Shop with Henry Holland: ‘I have a bit of a shoe problem’

5 hours ago 8

Henry Holland rose to prominence in 2006 with his collection of “fashion groupie” T-shirts, displaying rhyming slogans referencing fashion icons (such as “I’ll Show You Who’s Boss Kate Moss”), and founded his own brand, House of Holland, in 2008.

He discovered a passion for ceramics during the pandemic, and in 2021 launched the lifestyle brand Henry Holland Studio, selling handmade ceramics and homeware.

What’s the last treat you bought for yourself?

Probably a new collar and lead from Hay for our new puppy, Larry. I would have said Larry himself, but we rescued him from Battersea, so we didn’t actually “buy” him.

Where do you buy your food from?

Ocado, or from the Tesco around the corner when we need something in the moment.

What’s the best present you’ve given?

I recently gave my niece a full set of Labubus. I have no idea what the fascination is, but for a nine-year-old, it was life-changing. I was panicking that they may not be real, so I made sure to buy them from a resale site, StockX, that authenticates everything – the same one I usually buy trainers from. She was so happy when she opened them that she nearly burst into tears, so it was definitely worth it.

… and the best present you received?

A vintage watch from my husband for our engagement. We discussed it beforehand, and both got Rolexes from the year we were born instead of traditional rings.

What’s your favourite online store?

I shop a lot at End Clothing. It has a big selection of menswear and a great range of brands. I dress almost like two different people: one for when I’m in the studio and need casual workwear, and one for when I’m not. I can cover both bases there.

What’s your favourite bricks-and-mortar shop?

I love Liberty for fragrance and jewellery, and to see what people are doing in homeware too. I love the building, and it feels like a London institution.

What’s the gadget you use most often?

I would have to say my phone – boring but true.

What’s the purchase you regret the most?

Where do I start? I have a bit of a shoe problem and buy way too many. I often have pairs that I’ve worn once and never again.

What’s the thing/s you get delivered?

Food. Neither my husband nor I love to cook, so we get far too much food delivered – more than I’d like to admit.

Where do you buy your underwear?

I’m a Skims man these days. I made the switch from Calvin Kleins a year or so ago and haven’t looked back.

What would you buy with £20 – and £200?

With £20, I’d probably buy myself a freezing cold martini at Bistrotheque (my favourite cocktail bar, which is walking distance from my house).

And with £200, I’d buy 10 martinis!

What’s your ‘saved search’ on eBay/Vinted?

I used to collect old 90s Stephen Sprouse pieces, but now I’m on the lookout for old-season Prada shirts. They really stand the test of time.

What item do you buy on repeat?

Vape pods … embarrassing but true.

How do you make your coffee at home?

We have a Sage Oracle Jet – it makes every type of coffee you can imagine, from flat whites to espresso martinis. We love it; worth every penny.

What’s your biggest splurge?

Probably a personal trainer. I struggle to motivate myself to go to the gym, so I need an appointment in my diary to make sure I get my exercise in regularly.

… and what everyday item do you scrimp on?

I would say coffee. Once you have a great coffee machine, you save a huge amount of money by not buying coffee.

What’s your greatest vintage find?

A 1920s vintage dentistry cabinet that we have in our dressing room. My mum bought it for me about 20 years ago, and I’ve only just bought a house big enough to fit it in. We had it resprayed and added a marble top to finish it off – it’s a real statement piece that I love.
